Getting started
What is ProducePocket for?
It's for people who buy produce regularly from a supplier or market: build the day's buying list in advance, show each product's barcode at the register, record what you paid, and keep the receipt filed against that purchase.
Do I need an account?
Yes. An account keeps your records separate and private, and it's what lets them sync to your other devices and come back if you lose your phone. You can sign up with an email and password, or with your Google or Apple account.
What do I need to get going?
An iPhone, and ideally your product list as an Excel (.xlsx) file in the layout the importer expects (see below). If your spreadsheet is arranged differently, or you don't have one, you can build your catalog product by product by photographing labels instead — that works for anything.
Is it on Android or iPad?
ProducePocket is an iPhone app. It runs on iPad too, with a layout built for the bigger screen. Android isn't available at launch.
Importing your products
What file types can I import?
Excel .xlsx workbooks only. Older .xls files and .csv files aren't read — if that's what you have, open it in Excel or Numbers and save a copy as .xlsx. Note that the file also has to use the expected column layout, not just the right file type.
Will my supplier's spreadsheet work?
Not automatically — bulk import expects a particular layout. It reads the first sheet of the workbook and looks for the product identifier, name, price, purchase unit, and check digit each in their own expected column. A list arranged differently won't import correctly. If yours doesn't match, you can rearrange the columns to suit, or skip bulk import and add products by photographing their labels, which works regardless of paperwork.
Does it keep the barcode pictures from my spreadsheet?
Yes, exactly as they are. Each barcode image is matched to its row by where it actually sits in the sheet, and stored byte for byte — never redrawn, cropped, or swapped for a lookalike.
A product didn't come through
Items the importer couldn't confidently match are set aside for review instead of being guessed at or silently dropped. Check the review screen for the reason — usually two different images against one row, or an identifier that fails its own check digit — then fix it and re-run the import.
Can I import several products from one photo?
No — one photo adds one product, by design, so a name and a barcode can never get crossed. Use a workbook to bring in many at once.
The app can't read the barcode in my photo
Hold the phone steady, fill the frame using the on-screen guides, and turn the flash on in low light. Cropping tight around just the name and barcode helps a lot. If a number still can't be verified, type it in — the app checks it rather than taking your word for it.
What happens when I re-import an updated list?
New products are added and existing ones updated. Folders you've already paid for are never touched — they hold their own snapshot of what each product was at the time.
At the register
Will the store's scanner read a barcode off my screen?
Most modern camera-based scanners read phone screens fine; some older laser scanners only read printed labels. Turning your screen brightness up helps. Every barcode has its number printed underneath so a cashier can key it in if the scan won't take.
What if the app closes mid-checkout?
Nothing is lost. Every item you tick off is saved the moment you tick it, so reopening the app puts you back exactly where you were.
Does finishing checkout record a payment?
No, and that's deliberate. Scanning and paying are separate steps. Marking a folder paid is always your own explicit action, taken once the transaction is actually done.
Why can't I edit a folder after paying?
A paid folder locks so the record stays trustworthy — quantities, products, and the date can't change afterwards. Receipt photos are the exception: you can add or replace those at any time. To build a similar list, duplicate the folder.
I marked a folder paid by mistake
That can't be undone from inside the app, for the same reason. Email us with the folder name and date and we'll help sort it out.
Your data
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once you're signed in, building folders, showing barcodes, and checking out all work with no connection at all. You need a connection to sign in the first time and to sync with your other devices.
Does my data sync between devices?
Yes, and it's free — no subscription needed. Your catalog, folders, checkout progress, and receipt details sync automatically whenever you're online and signed in with the same account. A receipt photo's actual image only backs up to the cloud with Premium; otherwise it stays on the device that took it.
What happens if I lose my phone?
Sign in on a new phone and your catalog, folders, checkout progress, and receipt details come back. Receipt photos come back too, if they were backed up under an active subscription. Barcode images live on the device only, so re-import your workbook on the new phone to restore those — worth keeping that file somewhere safe.
Is my purchase data shared with anyone?
No. Nothing is sold, shared with suppliers, or used for advertising, and there's no ad tracking in the app. The Privacy Policy spells out exactly what's stored and where.
Are exports a backup I can restore from?
No — and it's worth being clear about that. Exports are readable records of your data as PDF, Excel, or JSON, for your own files, printing, or your accountant. There's no way to load one back into the app. What protects you against losing a phone is signing in on the new one, which brings your records back automatically.
How do I delete my account?
In the app: Settings › Delete Account. Deletion is immediate and permanent — your sign-in, your synced records, and any cloud-backed receipt photos are erased, with no recovery window. Export anything you want to keep first.
Paying
What does Premium actually add?
Unlimited barcode-backed products instead of five, cloud backup for receipt photos, and data exports. Everything else is free. Full detail on the pricing page.
What happens when my subscription ends?
Nothing is removed or locked. Your folders, products, receipts, and existing barcodes keep working. You just can't add new barcode-backed products beyond the free five, back up receipt photos, or export until you subscribe again.
I paid but Premium isn't active
Open the Premium screen and tap Restore Purchases, making sure you're signed in to the same ProducePocket account and the same Apple ID you bought with. If it still doesn't activate, get in touch.
